We have gathered all the information you need to know about these marvelous structures. Join us today as we dive into what makes the Inner Space Cavern in Georgetown, Texas so special.

A cave with a lot of stalagmites and stalactites hanging from the ceiling.

Believe it or not, the cave system was actually discovered by accident during the Spring of 1963. The Texas Highway Department was drilling the nearby ground to see if it was stable for a potential large highway overpass. During this test, the drill bit suddenly dropped over 26 feet, alerting the crew that there just might be something other than rocks beneath them.

This led to the discovery of the immense cave system, where they quickly spent the next few months studying the area. Years later, in 1966, the cave system was opened to the public, who have cherished it ever since. Today it can be explored in its warm 72 degree interior, offering a cozy, yet thrilling experience to all who participate.

An Accidental Discovery

A Geological Wonderland

The Inner Space Cavern is a wondrous limestone cave, shaped over centuries by the slow, steady drip of acidic water through rock. The result? Fascinating formations like:

  • Stalactites: An icicle-shaped formation that hangs from the ceiling. Most stalactites have pointed tips, and often have water dripping from them.
  • Stalagmites: This upward-growing mound is created from the dripping water off the stalactite tips. The stalagmites differ in that they have rounded or flattened tips, versus the pointed tips of the stalactites.
  • Columns: Sometimes stalagmites and stalactites meet in the middle, forming what is referred to as a column. These can be seen throughout the caves.
  • Flowstones and soda straws: These mesmerizing structures hang from the ceiling or along the walls of the caves, and are stalactites in different shapes and sizes. Flowstones appear as a wave of calcite, whereas soda straws appear as sharp and skinny tube-like stalactites.
